Y’all are finally ready to talk about gun control?

I would like to start out by saying that I am 100% in support of the March for our lives, and the school walkouts (we even organized one at my high school), and I’m glad that gun reform is getting the attention it deserves. HOWEVER, I would like to point out that black kids have been asking for it for years. We have been saying that gun violence is a problem, but for some reason it always takes white people or white-passing people of color being affected for anyone to acknowledge and admit that there is a problem. This reminded me of earlier in the summer when it took the death of a white woman in Charlottesville for many of my white followers on twitter to speak out and for many to attend protests about/against white supremacy. Where were you when black boys were being murdered? When black girls were being gunned down? Where were you when children of color cried out in horror as they lost their brothers and sister? Where were you when we were asking for gun reform? Why didn’t we recieve the same support? Why were we met with backlash? Why didn’t our stories make the news? Is a 12 year old being fatally shot by officers not a form of gun violence? Why are we thugs when we we’re murdered under false pretense, yet they are never called terrorists after killing so many innocent people? Is anything committed against us enough to make you sick to your stomach- enough to make you want to march with us? All I ask is that as you march for our lives, be sure that includes black ones.

I’ll leave you with two quotes.

“Privilege is when you think that something’s not a problem because it’s not a problem for you personally”

-David Gaider

“If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality.”

-Desmond Tutu
